Godsstråket genom SkåneGodsstråket genom SkåneThe Freight Route Through Skåne The freight line through Skåne is the Trafikverket's collective name for the railway that runs between Ängelholm and Arlöv (Malmö) and on from Malmö to Trelleborg. The section Åstorp - Teckomatorp goes by the name Söderåsbanan, while Kävlinge - Arlöv is called the Lommabanan and Malmö– Trelleborg the Kontinentalbanan or Trelleborgsbanan. In the north, the line connects to the Västkustbanan, to which the part north of Malmö used to belong. That section was relatively moderately used while waiting for the Hallandsås tunnel, which was inaugurated in December 2015. The line is now used to divert freight traffic past the Västkustbanan's coastal and fully passenger train-adapted section. Previously, freight traffic went on the Markarydsbanan to Hässleholm and from there to Malmö on the heavily loaded Södra stambanan. Skånetrafiken is planning for an extended Påga train service along most of the track. The traffic to Trelleborg began in December 2015 and on 9 December 2018 the passenger trains began to run between the stations Östervärn, Rosengård, Persborg, Svågertorp and Hyllie on their journey between Malmö C and Triangeln. Godsstråket genom Skåne History The northern part of the line was built by two individual railway companies. The main part of the Landskrona-Ängelholm Railway (LEJ) was opened in 1876 and was partly motivated by Landskrona's interests in reaching the Scanian hard coal fields around Söderåsen and Billesholm as well as Ängelholm's desire for connection with the emerging railway network. The Malmö-Billesholm Railway (MBJ) opened in 1886 after intensive construction and was motivated by Malmö's desire not to be left without a direct connection to the increasingly current West Coast Railway between Gothenburg and Skåne, however, it was forced to give up the nearest road in order to facilitate connection to Lund- Kävlinge Railway which was built at the same time.
