JönköpingsbananJönköpingsbananJönköpingsbanan Nässjö and Falköping The Jönköpingsbanan is a railway that runs between Nässjö and Falköping. It is single-track and electrified. The line is served by passenger trains from Jönköping's county traffic and Västtågen where Jönköping's county traffic tickets are valid on the part of the Jönköping's line within Jönköping's county. SJ also operates the line from Jönköping towards Nässjö and Stockholm with a daily departure in each direction. The railway has the railway stations Nässjö, Forserum, Tenhult, Huskvarna. Jönköping, Bankeryd, Habo, Mullsjö, Sandhem and Falköping. Jönköpingsbanan History The name Jönköpingsbanan for the section between Falköping and Nässjö was established in 1990 by the then Banverket. The line was originally built in 1858–1864 as part of the Southern Trunk Line. From Malmö you traveled on the Södra stambanan north, via Nässjö and Jönköping to Falköping, which was a station on the Wästra stambanan (Gothenburg-Stockholm). Here the journey either continued east with the final station Stockholm, or west towards Gothenburg. Construction from the north began as early as 1858, after the Western main line was completed to Falköping, and soon after work continued along the entire stretch towards Mullsjö. In 1861, the exact route between Mullsjö and Jönköping had not yet been determined. Nils Ericsson, who was in charge of the construction of Sweden's main railways, wrote in his quarterly report that no section in the country required as much investigation as the section north of Jönköping. On November 8, 1862, the Falköping-Mullsjö section was inaugurated, at the same time as the Western main line. On this date, traffic on the Södra main line was only running to Liatorp, north of Älmhult. The Mullsjö-Jönköping line was inaugurated on 1 December 1863 and thus the entire line north from Jönköping was completed. The Southern main line opened traffic to Alvesta on 1 October of the same year, but still had not reached Nässjö. During 1864, the Södra main line was opened for traffic, first to Lammhult on 1 June and then to Sandsjö on 1 October. The entire Jönköping Railway (Nässjö-Jönköping) was opened to traffic on 1 December 1864, at the same time as the entire Södra Stamban was inaugurated. Since the then Eastern main line was completed in 1874 between Nässjö and Katrineholm, that section has completely taken over the Jönköpingsbanan's function as a track connection between Stockholm and southern Sweden. In 1892, it was also possible to travel between Malmö and Gothenburg on the railways along the west coast, the stretch which, after nationalization in 1896, was named the Västkustbanan, which contributed to the reduction of long-distance travel over the Jönköpingsbanan. The Jönköping line was electrified in 1932, and around this time there were proposals to build a double track between Tenhult and Mullsjö, but it did not happen.
